I am a member of KuFo (the Culture Studies Research Group), one of Karlstad University's prioritized research groups.
My research interests concern primarily aesthetic response, phenomenology and hermeneutics (such as the theoretical methods of Geneva and Constance School). Currently, I am working on a project that studies gaps in narrative media, mainly literature, film and graphic novel. The selected material covers a wide range of genres and artworks, from the 18th century novel to the modernist novel and popular fiction. In addition, the project will discuss the effects of the gap in relation to Martin Heidegger’s conceptualization of nothing. The aim is to further understand the mechanisms and metaphysical impacts of verbal and visual texts in our everyday reality.
My dissertation Strindberg’s world (2012) is a close reading of six works emblematic of different literary styles in Strindberg’s oeuvre, including Miss Julie (1888) and Inferno (1897). The purpose is to find the author in the literary text, not in an objective reality. Thus, through a phenomenological-hermeneutical approach, the study reveals a provisional notion of the world of experience of consciousness and breaks new ground within the field of Strindberg research. It points out that Strindberg's writing is deeply involved in a struggle with the conditions of existence, not least as a fundamental experience of emptiness. In this way, the study manages to follow a seemingly hidden strategy and to problematize at the same time the ideological message of the text. Strindberg’s literary work can be understood as an existential project.
I teach for example Nordic and Western European literature (1880-1950) as well as literary theory at the undergraduate level. Additionally, I give courses in creative writing and supervise advanced-level literary essays.
I was awarded an M.A. in Comparative Literature as well as a B.A in Film, Literature and Philosophy from the University of Stockholm. I undertook my doctoral studies at the University of Southern Denmark where received my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature in 2011. In 2012, I started lecturing in literature at Karlstad University. July 2015-December 2016, I served as Director of Studies at the Department of Language, Literature and Intercultural Studies. Apart from this, I have more than seven years of work experience within film production as well as educational qualifications from New York, Berlin and Paris.
