Swedish as a second language is one of the core subjects in primary and secondary education. Swedish as a second language as an area of research and a university subject is designed above all for students who are interested in teaching the subject in pre-school, primary and secondary education and adult education.
Courses are also offered to exchange students who want to learn basic Swedish.
Swedish as a Second Language includes the study of multilingualism, the structure of language, second language acquisition and issues regarding migration and ethnicity. At Karlstad University, the subject Swedish as a Second Language can normally be studied at the undergraduate level (1-90 ECTS cr) as complete 30 ECTS cr courses or in 7.5 ECTS cr modules.
The staff members have a strong interest in subject-specific education research, especially in the areas of migration and powerful knowledge, and multilingual students’ reading comprehension and reading strategies at lower secondary school.
