Film has been considered the most important art forms of the 20th century and film today has been incorporated into a vast and pervasive culture of moving images. Film as an academic subject addresses both of these strands: the developments and changes in aesthetics and style, as well as how film and moving image media affects and shapes our society.
Film Studies at Karlstad University is international in its orientation and all courses are taught in English. You may obtain a BA in Film Studies. The mandatory courses for a BA are all theory based, but these may be combined with the various courses in documentary, animation or editing, courses that are all practice based. The purpose of these courses is to blend theory and practice and to approach filmmaking as yet another way of exploring film and the moving image.
The aim with Film Studies at Karlstad University is to study and deepen the knowledge of film both from a theoretical and practical point of view in order to understand both the moving image media and its contexts. Established scholars and filmmakers teach all courses.
