Literacy Development in Education
30 ECTS credits
The aim of the course is that students acquire basic knowledge of Swedish and subject-specific teaching methodology. The course deals with basic reading and writing skills and strategies for developing reading and writing in regard to fiction, narration, and discursive text types. Students learn the skills and understanding required to meet a heterogeneous group of pupils, underpinned by perspectives on gender and identity and issues of first and second language.
Module I Basic reading and writing, 7.5 ECTS cr
The module deals with how children learn to read and write and how process-oriented writing as well as ICT can form part of pupils' learning.
Components:
- linguistic awareness - from speech to writing
- theories on reading and writing development
- ICT in the teacher's daily practice
- process-oriented writing
Module II Basic grammar, Swedish as a second language and extended writing, 7.5 ECTS cr
The module deals with how to create learning environments based on interplay and interaction. Basic grammar is studied and process-oriented writing is discussed.
Components:

- poetry as a pedagogical tool for creative grammar and writing development
- Swedish as a second language
Module III Narrating, children's literature and extended reading, 7.5 ECTS cr
The module deals with the importance of narrating and children's literature in thematic perspectives. The literacy concept is discussed and students develop knowledge of the extended reading, including reading comprehension of non-fictional prose and literary texts.

Module IV Documentation, assessment and reading and writing difficulties, 7.5 ECTS cr
The module deals with the areas of assessment and documentation as parts of the teaching practice along with reading and writing issues.
Components:
- transforming the curriculum for Swedish into the teaching of the relevant age group
- observing and documenting children's reading and writing development
- text analysis of pupils' production
- introduction to reading and writing problems
- summative and formative evaluation
