Home nursing and advanced home nursing
15.0 ECTS creditsThe course integrates Nursing (5 ECTS cr) and Medical Science (10 ECTS cr).
Instruction is in the form of group work, lectures, a clinical placement (VFU, 4 weeks), assignments, and seminars. Attendance at the clinical placement is mandatory, and students' ability to work independently is emphasised. The course is partly net-based and different information and communication techniques are used.
Students acquire in-depth knowledge of the role and responsibility of the public health nurse in the interprofessional team for habilitation and rehabilitation of persons of all ages with disabilities, and study how disability affects life conditions and quality of life. The course covers the municipal organisation of and responsibility for services regulated in the Act on Support and Service to Persons with Disabilities (LSS).
Knowledge of the most common types of dementia is treated from the perspectives of medicine and care. Gerontology, geriatrics, and geriatric psychiatry are studied on the basis of current evidence. Person-centred nursing and the public health nurse's work in advanced home nursing are studied. The studies address the planning of the nursing process of patients in need of advanced home nursing, for example, complex medical conditions and palliative care, with regard to cultural background and gender.
The areas of nutrition and pain are analysed. Emphasis is placed on the importance of including next-of-kin in the care planning. The public health nurse's specific knowledge and responsibility in intraprofessional and interprofessional teams are studied in terms of the public health nurse's main area of expertise, which includes giving an account of and implementing current ordinances, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to home nursing regarding, for example, delegation and hygiene issues. The medical technology in advanced home nursing is studied in relation to guidelines and environmental and working environment aspects. During the clinical placement period, students develop their professional approach in terms of the function of the public health nurse, both as a leader and in relation to development efforts, for patient safety and high quality nursing.
Students also reflect upon quality and patient safety measures and study this area based on potential effects in municipal health care from a patient and next-of-kin perspective. Further, different questionnaires/assessment instruments are studied critically and in terms of how they can be used in nursing.

A nursing degree and admission to a specialist nursing programme with a specialisation in public health nursing, plus upper secondary level Swedish 3 or Swedish as a second language 3 and English 6 or A, or equivalent

Selection is usually based on your grade point average from upper secondary school or the number of credit points from previous university studies, or both.
