Abstract:
ICT: a vehicle for social transformation For this seminar I introduce the ethnographic fieldwork I conducted among farmers in Uganda during my doctoral studies. My post-doctoral research will build on this work, and further the contribution of non-western accounts to the field of gender and technology studies. I draw on theories from this field to analyze access and use of ICTs in Uganda among urban and rural farmers. Focusing on the concept of social access, my study highlights the sometimes neglected or misunderstood nuances of the social landscape and its influence on ICT integration processes. Gender as a category of social organization has acquired attention in how it shapes and is shaped by technology and studying ICTs in this light, opens up a multitude of other structures of influence such as ethnicity, race, age and class. In Summary, technology and gender are seen as cultural enterprises. This diversifies the understanding of gender and technology and contributes to a cross cultural comparative analysis of the field.
