Karlstad University invites applications for

Professor of Mathematics Education

Mathematics is a doctoral discipline at Karlstad University, Department of Mathematics. At present, the department has two professors, one associate professor and several doctoral students in the mathematical field. The department contributes extensively to teacher training for all educational levels and to commissioned further training of pre and primary school teachers. The department is now recruiting a professor to lead and develop research activities in mathematics education. Currently, there are four active doctoral students in mathematics education, which is part of the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering education research group. The group also collaborates with researchers and doctoral students in the field of educational work. One of Karlstad University's prioritized area of study is "Learning at School and Work". Karlstad University is part of the international academic community and invites international applicants to the post.

Duties: The duties of the post mainly include research and postgraduate education. We are seeking a highly qualified researcher in mathematics education who can develop and lead activities. The successful candidate is primarily expected to do research and supervise doctoral students but also actively to attract external funding and partake in research networks nationally and internationally. Duties include teaching and developing courses in mathematics education for future teachers at all educational levels. Other teaching and some administration may be required. The language of instruction may initially be Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or English. Eventually, and after language training, the non-Swedish speaking successful candidate is expected to teach and supervise in Swedish.

Requirements and appointment criteria:
Requirements: Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in mathematics education, mathematics with an emphasis on teaching methodology, or equivalent qualifications. In addition, applicants should have demonstrated broad and deep academic qualifications in the mathematics education field, adequate experience of postgraduate teaching, particularly regarding supervision in the mathematics education field and experience of leading research projects. The applicant's academic qualifications should be relevant to secondary and upper secondary education. The applicant is also required to have demonstrated pedagogical skills and to have experience of teaching mathematics to future teachers as well as shown interest in teaching. Initially, the position requires that the language of instruction is Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or good English. Further requirements are cooperative skills, resourcefulness and a positive attitude to colleagues and students.

Appointment criteria: The degree of academic qualifications in the field of mathematics education in terms of scope, originality, depth and breadth is a particularly important assessment criterion. Special consideration is given to the quality and success of research project leadership. Special consideration is also given to teaching qualifications in postgraduate mathematics education as well as to well-developed networks in the candidates' own and adjacent fields. Ability to attract research funding is given special consideration as is research qualifications in mathematics education for primary and secondary education. Consideration is given to successful experience of teaching mathematics in teacher education.

Additional information: The position is permanent and full-time employment with starting-date at the earliest convenience.

  • list of published works
  • copies of certificates, references and degree certificates
  • copies of the works you wish to cite, a maximum of ten academic publications, and a maximum of five works intended to disseminate expertise, e.g. text books, computer programs for teaching or articles on popular science
