Organization

Karlstad University has a student population of 11,500 students and 1,200 employees. Below is an overview of the university’s organisational structure.

University Board

The overall control and responsibility for higher education and research in Sweden lies with the Swedish Parliament and the Government. The highest decision-making body within the university is the University Board. The Government appoints the members of the board who represent the interests of external parties such as academia, industry and politics, The remaining members represent faculty members, employee unions and the student body. 

Executive Management

The Vice-Chancellor and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor operate directly under the Board. The Vice-Chancellor has also appointed two Assistant Vice-Chancellors with responsibility for external relations and quality assurance issues respectively. The Vice-Chancellor’s executive team also includes the University Director. A student union representative is present at the Vice-Chancellor’s executive meetings for decisions. The extended executive management team comprises the Vice-Chancellor’s executive team, the Deans and Deputy Deans for the two faculties and teacher education, the Assistant University Director, the Director of Human Resources and the Director of Communications and External Relations, and the President of the Student Union.

Faculties and Administration

The two Faculties and the Office for Teacher Education are responsible for education, research and external relations. It is the duty of the two Faculty Boards and the Board of Teacher Education to ensure the quality of education and research. The task of the University Administration and Central Services unit is to provide support and services to the faculties, the management and the board, as well as to report to the Ministry of Education, the National Agency of Higher Education, the Agency for Higher Education Services, and other external actors.

University Library

The University Library is an academic library open to the public. Its main role is to provide services to students, teachers and researchers. It is an important workplace for on-campus students. The University Library runs the publishing company Karlstad University Press.
